TWO YEARS OLD AND CRYING FOR A CIGARETTE, this video is remarkably sad as it discusses the family as well as the extent of the smoking problem among Indonesia’s youth, including toddlers. Also in the report, a video posted online of a four year old smoking like an adult is shown.
How did this get attention?
The main problem the parents felt they were facing was the cost of the 40+ cigarettes their baby was smoking, not os much the health issue. The report explains that the health risks are somewhat well known, however rampant advertising seems to be the main driver for the cultural acceptance of smoking…including the apparent acceptance of a toddler smoking.

Here’s the link to the video on CNN. Indonesia is the only Asia-Pacific country that has not ratified the World Health Organization’s framework on tobacco control because “We’re still discussing it” says a spokesperson for the country’s Ministry of Health.
Dr. Sears describes a number of ways in which smoking adversely affects your baby’s health on his website www.AskDrSears.com. He also writes how smoking hampers natural mothering. Mothers who smoke tend to…
- Not breastfeed
- Wean earlier
- Have more breastfeeding problems
- Have been found to have lower levels of prolactin, the hormone that affects milk production and affects mothering bahavior
- which may cause dimished awareness of infant’s needs
- Increased risk for SIDS
